Despite being one of the most talented (and rich) Southern superstars in the entertainment and music business, Taylor Swift is getting no love from NYC. The 24-year-old singer released her newest album, 1989 and it features a track called, “Welcome to New York.” Her love for the Big Apple landed her the job as Global Welcome Ambassador for New York City.
But wait, people got pissed! The Pennsylvania-native got a lot of flak, New Yorkers are shocked that someone who is not originally from New York was chosen to represent the city.
For her part, Swift has been living in the city for less than a year. She bought an apartment in the trendy Tribeca area worth millions.
Swift seemed upbeat about her new role. Appearing on Good Morning America, the singer said, “I’m so enthusiastic about this city that I feel like, when I love something, I’m very vocal about it, I’m vocal about it with my music.”
“I’m incensed! It’s insulting. She doesn’t have any life experience here, or connection to the town. There’s so many others — Jerry Seinfeld, for instance, if you want a big name.”
Although NYC Go’s decision generated a lot of negative responses from locals on their Facebook page, the agency stood by its decision.
“We couldn’t have asked for a better synergy between Taylor and NYC & Company to tell our story about what makes New York City, New York City. This is a campaign targeting visitors to New York City rather than locals.”
